Cyprus is a gloriously beautiful Mediterranean island, covered with legends and myths, breathing history and it is surrounded by marvellous nature. The island is located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. The Island was visited by many civilizations such as: the Phoenicians and Assyrians, Persians and Egyptians, Romans and Crusaders, Byzantines and Venetians, the Turks and the British. But its inhabitants have always managed to preserve their identities. Cyprus is the only country in the world, whose capital is divided into two areas, the Turkish & the Cypriot. That was a result of the occupation of Northern Cyprus by Turkish aggressors in 1974.
The Island developed a network of four-lane road linking all main cities of Cyprus - the capital Nicosia, Limasol, Larnaca and Paphos. In foreign policy, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus adheres to the policy of non-alignment to the military and political blocs. The Republic of Cyprus is a member of the United Nations (1960), the Non-Aligned Movement (1960), the Council of Europe (1961), and the British Commonwealth of Nations (1961). Now Cyprus is also a member of the European Union (2004). Official languages of Cyprus are Greek and Turkish. English is a widely spoken language and there is also increased knowledge and use of French and German languages. Cyprus has sufficiently a large Russian community; therefore, Russian language is becoming more popular.
